School Transfers within LESD

A school transfer is for current LESD students to apply to transfer to another LESD school.

The school transfer applications for the 2023-2024 school year will be available in May 2023

Permits & School Transfers

Interdistrict Permit Process

To submit an incoming/outgoing permit application, please follow one of the options below:

1. Print, complete and drop off the application with all required documents to our district office or

2. Print, complete and email the application with all required documents to patricia_gonzalez@lawndalesd.net 

Terms and Conditions
  • Students who have already been granted an Interdistrict Permit do not need to reapply annually for a release from their home district.
  • Approval is subject to space availability in the district and may not be at the school site requested.
  • Students who are eligible for Special Education Services may be asked to obtain an Inter/Intra-SELPA Agreement for Individuals with Exceptional Needs, in addition to the Interdistrict Permit. No financial obligation shall be incurred by the district of residence for services rendered under this agreement.
  • The parent/guardian is responsible for providing transportation to and from school for students on Interdistrict Permit.

Permit & School Transfer Applications: Must include the document(s) requested to support the reason. Documentation must be attached to the application at the time of submission.

Reason for Request Documentation Required (NOTE: All documents listed are required)
Child care
  • Letter from parent/guardian explaining the circumstances that an interdistrict permit is necessary under child care reasons.
  • Proof of employment of all parents/guardians who are involved in student’s life on a day-to-day basis.
    • Letter on the employer’s stationery verifying schedule (hours and days) and location of employment. If self-employed, letter stating schedule (hours and days) and location.
  • Letter from the adult, center or organization providing child care.
Parent employment by the requested school district
  • Letter from parent/guardian explaining the circumstances that an interdistrict permit is necessary.
  • Proof of employment of all parents/guardians who are employed by the requested school district.
    • Letter on the employer’s stationery verifying schedule (hours and days).
Medical
  • Letter from parent/guardian explaining the circumstances that an interdistrict permit is necessary.
  • A letter from the physician is required stating health situation.
Promotion
  • Must be a returning student and completing the final grade (5th or 8th) offered at the same school.
  • Copy of report card is required to verify enrollment.
Boundaries (For Wiseburn Choice Blocks ONLY)

The following proofs of residency are required and each must state the same name and address of the enrolling parent/guardian.

  • Driver license
  • Two utility bills or show a rental agreement verifying if you do not pay utilities
Complete school year

Family moves into Lawndale during the last trimester. The following is required:

  • Letter from parent/guardian explaining the circumstances that an interdistrict permit is necessary.
  • Copy of report card is required to verify enrollment.
Special circumstances Letter from parent/guardian explaining special circumstance that an interdistrict permit is necessary.

 

  • All permit applications will be processed online 
  • Upon submitting a permit application to the Student Support Services Department, a permit will be approved or denied based on LESD Interdistrict Permit Policy
  • If your permit is denied, the family has a right to appeal in writing within 10 days of denial to the LESD Superintendent
  • Within 10 days of receiving the appeal , the Superintendent will approve or deny the appeal based on LESD Interdistrict Permit Policy
  • The decision of the Superintendent of the Lawndale Elementary School District is the district’s
    final action on your request. You have the right to appeal this decision to the Los Angeles
    County Office of Education (LACOE) within thirty (30) calendar days from the date of the Superintendent

  • LACOE has 45 days to render a decision after the family submits an appeal.  LACOE's decision is final and binding.
