The Dirt on Gardening

Magic Gardens By Michelle Harris

In a magical land, plants and life grow, grow, grow. If you haven’t heard, all seven elementary schools at LESD have gardens that provide students, teachers and parents the opportunity to learn about life and growth through gardening.

“The kids love getting their hands dirty,” said Kris Lauritson, the master behind the garden magic. “They love watering the plants and soil, planting and especially looking for bugs.”

Lauritson began planting a school garden at Billy Mitchell Elementary in 2009. Since then, her passion for gardening led her to develop gardens at the other sites. She also plays the role of garden teacher, grant writer, maintenance worker and oversees the LESD commodity program, an initiative that provides crops to food banks to assist economically disadvantaged families.

Lauritson gets a lot of support from community members and parents like Evelyn Duarte who has been volunteering at the gardens for three years.

“I started volunteering at the garden because of my children,” said Duarte. “They would always come home and tell me how much fun they had at the garden and I wanted to see what they were learning.”

According to Lauritson, kids want to be active participants in the magic of gardening—it allows them to be future explorers for life.
